father O’DONJST HILL’S (Of Ashburton) OPINION. Blenheim, this day. TV/1 UCH public interest was taken in a "A lecture delivered here last night by the Rev. Father Servajean on PROHIBITION. The hall was crowded, and among those present was the Rev. Mr Fairclough, of Wellington, who speaks to-night in reply to Father Servajean’s j views.
The lecturer says his address was prompted by a letter he had received from the NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE. Asking him to preach a I SPECIAL TEMPERANCE SERMON In view of the coming Elections. He resented the letter as an INTEEFEBENOE. As he NEVEB LOST AN OPPOBTUNITY Of urging his Congregation to TEMPEBANOE.
This ineident led to correspondence in the press, and to his appearance on the public platform. THE ADDRESS STRONGLY DISAPPROVED of the PRINCIPLE OP PROHIBITION .AND NO LICENSE. He condemned the present open bar system and the Evils of the “ Shouting ” Custom. He suggested the Continential Cafe System, Which, from experience, he could say did not encourage Excessive Drinking. Speaking of Ashburton, he had just wired to FATHER O’DONNELL, The Parish Priest there, asking him If Prohibition was really a benefit, and the Reply was
“NO. “Taking all things into consideration, “ Prohibition is not a Benefit.” The speaker got an excellent hearing. PROHIBITION having proved. A FAILURE in other districts, WHY introduce it into WAIAPU? The increased population and the prosperity around us should CAUSE THE ELECTORS To be Cautious about Introducing DRASTIC CHANGE?, Which have been Proved to produce WORSE EVILS than now exist, and would Chang* the Burden of Taxation from the Luxuries to the Necessaries of Life. > " *' t
