WAIAPU ELECTION. G. E. DARTON’S CANDIDATURE. I regret that my late advent into the field prevents me from addressing the electors at each of the centres, more particularly as I am standing in the LIBERAL, LABOR, AND NOLICENSE INTERESTS. Briefly stated I am a strong supporter of the. present Government, believing that the present administration has done more I for the 'Working naan and small settler than any previous party, especially the present Opposition, LAND QUESTION.
I am strongly opposed to granting the freehold to lease-holders at the original valuation. Instead of the lease in perpetuity I would favor a lease for 2 with right of re newal, valuation to be given for improvements. All transfers of land, including freeholds, to be in accordance with the present conditions of the Land Act, and approved by the District Land Registrar. An amendment of the ballot system to prevent speculation in Crown land, graduated land tax, whereby the revenue would be contributed by those best able to afford it, namely, the large landholders. I favor a progressive Land for Settlement policy, and would advocate the resumption of estates, improved and unimproved, on the Coast, for closer settlement. THE LABOR QUESTION. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS ■I mo3t strongly advocate the claim s of unionism, believing that it tends to promote a better standard of efficiency and it a security, both for the employer and employee. I consider the preference clause should form part of the statute.
NO-LICENSE, I favor the referendum of the people being strictly adhered, to, and from a democratic stand point consider that this as well as all other reforms should be carried by a bare majority. EAST COAST TRUST BOARD. I strongly protest against the manner in which the East Coast Trust Board has disposed of 150,000 acres of the lands under their control, be- ; lieving that if this had been administered by the Government the number of new settlers would have been vastly increased. DISTRICT GRANTS. I claim that this district - has not received fair treatment in the' way of Government grants. [A HINDRANCE TO PROGRESS. ! The vast area of native lands at present unoccupied along the Coast is | the most' serious drawback to- the suci cessf ul settlement k of our district, and iit will b*s my endeavor to have the | block incorporated to enable them to [be thrown open for settlement. In casting your votes 1 respectfully ask you to consider whether our present member is doing his- best for the | workers of the district which he reI presents. I claitfi that he is not, and : for that reason ask you- to support the 1 LIBERAL AND LABOR CANDIDATE 1 Again regretting my inability to iddress you personally, I remain', Tours Obediently, G. E. DARTON.
