Mosers Dalgety and Co. and Common, Shelton and> Co. report: "There was a fair attendance at our stock sale oh Thursday, and the demand for cattle showed an improvement on late sales, especially for young etook. In addition to the prices already quoted, we sold 63 three-yoar-old steers et £4 17s, and 12 heifers at £3 16s. Our next sale will bo held on Tbnrsday next, foe which good entries are anticipated.?’
II The deciding] heat for Mr B. Cox’s t trophies by the members of tbo Poverty 3 Bay Rowing Club was rowed off on Sature day night between W. McGuffie and R, t Jones’ crews. Mr A. Pritchard started them, both orews getting well away together, McGuffie’a crew, however, were too strong for their opponents, and soon established a good lead, being assisted by erratic steering in. Jones' boat. At the bridge Jones’ crew made a strong effort to get the lead, but MoGuffie’s orew was equal to the stroke's call, and held their lead io the finish, winning a hard rowed race by about two lengths. The winning orew were jW. McGotfie (str.), T. Sheen . (8), J. Young (2), W. Pritobard (bow). The members of the Cook County Council interviewed the Hon. Jai. Carroll on Saturday morning in regard to district requirements. The chairman explained the position the Oonnoil were in respecting grants, and pointing oat that before they got any amount from Government they had ocfually to spend the amount voted, The financial position of tbe Council made this very difficult. The Council wished to see some adequate basis for the granting of votes, and be considered the district was entitled to special treatment in this matter. Mr Carroll.-said he appreciated the difficulties, and would do what be could for the Council.. There was no recognised system by which grants were given to local bodies, which had their own powers of rating. To improve the system of Government grants a Dew Local Government Act was required. General discussion followed, and at the close a vote of thanks was acoorded to Mr Carroll, i The Connoil decided to undertake the 1 expenditure of the Hangaroa-Tabota grant e (£800), provided the engineer could find 1 1 lime to attend to it.
