The Rotorua murder ease wos commenced in Auckland yesterday. The man killed was known to a good many Gisborne people. Mr Bastable, by whom Hislop was employed, worked in Gisborne for a time as a baker. General sympathy will be felt for Mr Campbell, who fired the fatal shot.

The Beoond race of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s trial fours took place last evening, when McGuffie met Webb. The crews were : McGuffie (stroke), T. Sheen, J. Young, W. Pritohard, and J. Webb (Btroke), R. Moore, W. Burnaud, 0. Louie. The orews wero despatched to a good start. McGuffie established a lead, which he maintained throughout, winning a good raoe by a couple of lengths. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday j judgment by default was given by Mr Barton, S.M., in tbe following cases:— James McKee (Mr T. Alston Coleman) v. Wm. Ohas. Whitfield, olaim £ll 11s 6d, costs £1 10s fid; Cbas. Matthews (Mr Finn) v. Leonard CummiDge, olaim £2 Bs, oosts 10s; Harry Bandlant (Mr 11. U. I Burke). v. Robert Little, olaim £4 15s, oosts 10s. In the ease Jas. McKee (Mr T. Alston Coleman) v. Chas. Westrup, judgI ment summons, an order was made for immediate payment of debt and oosts, totalling £l7 Os 4d, in default 18 days’ imprisonment. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday a good deal of evidenoe was taken in a I Bheep-worrying case, Matenga Toihuka I and Marangai ’Haapu (Mr Stook) suing (Daniel Courtney (Mr Lysnar) for the value of sheep killed by defendant’s dogs. The evidenoe for plaintiff was that defendant’s dog and a Maori dog wero shot I while in the aot of worrying the sheep. 1 Four sheep were found dead on the first day, and seven on the following day, and also five lambs, the value of tbe sheep I being placed at £1 per bead, and the lambs at Bs. His Worship said he wrs satisfied tbe number stated had been killed, but tho amount of tbe claim was I excessive. It seemed to him that plaintiff had fixed tbe amouDt of the damage at £lO, when he aocepted a horse for the I damage done by the other dog, would give judgment for £5, and cSists £4lss. _____
