It was decided to write to the County ranger, drawing his attention to the matter and insisting on having the nuisancej remedied. GRANTS FOB ROAD 3. Notice of several grants for roads were received from the Roads’ Department. These included the following : Farming and 'metalling Mangamaia dray road GisborneWairoa road, metalling £IOO, Tolago to Wigan £ for £, Wainui and Tolago £IOO, Arakihi to Wigan £2OO, Baraka to Waihora £97 16s, Gisborne to Waimata /100 (£ for £), Mongatakerau Valley £IOO. Cr Wall asked if the votes mentioned were all that the district was to receive in the way of expenditure on roads and bridges up to the 31st March next. The Chairman said that it was all that has so far come to hand, They would also receivo £IOOO for the Puotae Rocks, and £SOO for the Waipaoa bridge, and other amounts. He suggested that the Connoil should meet Mr Carroll and jmint out to him the necessity for having the time for spending the rates {extended. —This was agreed to. MOTU ROAD. Messrs Jackson Broß, wrote stating that, having purchased the portion oi the Lome Estate, known as Morris’, they intended to build at the waterfall on the old Motu road. They desired the latter from Karaka to the plaoe where the creek crossed to be put in order. The Oounoil dooided to make such improvements as the state of thoir finances permitted. ' COASTAL CEMETERY. The Counoil deoided to grant the sum of £5 towards the maintenance and improvements of the Tolago oemetery ; also to grant 20 yards of rubble, now lying in the quarry, towards the same purpose. A WHAREKOPAE DEPUTATION. A deputation of Wharekopae Bottlers, comprising Messrs McOutoheon, Steele, Murphy, and Hutohinßon waited upon the Oounoil in regard to their road. Mr MoCutoheon stated that the road wsb under the jurisdiction of the Ngatapa Board, but that body was not in a position to open the road for wheeled traffio. They were promised the earn of £2O next March by the Ngatapa Board. Tho deputation asked the Council to take the road over.

Mr Hutchinson said that the deputation desired the Counoil to put the road in repair at the expense oi the settlers, and that the Council should afterwards maintain it. The Chairman said that the Counoil would consider the mattor, and communi>oate with the deputation; When the matter came up in the afternoon it was deoided to comply with the request to take'the road over, provided a guarantee wasgiven by those forming the deputation. EXPENDITURE OF FOURTHS.

He should not grant even a few pounds here and there until I they saw how they stood. The Chairman endorsed Or Matthews’ remarks,* and it was deoided to defer consideration of the application. REBATE OF RATES. A request from Mr H. Harding, of Haniti, asking for a rebate of £1 4s 4d for work which he had done on the road was declined, the Council considering that any olaim for work done should be made in writing. The ohairman pointed out that it would be a,bad precedent to establish to allow a ratepayer to do a certain amount of work and then olaim a remission of rates. AN INDEPENDENT RATEPAYER. Mr R. McNeil, of Takapnu, wrote stating that at the last meeting of the Council six pounds was voted as a subsidy for draihiDg the road and cutting outlet on Paromata. Ho begged to decline the offer as it did not meet his requirements in the least,'arid be thought the Board had better make other arrangements. Or H. The Chairman: We have never received one before. The offer was accepted with thanks. GISBORNE-ROTORUA RAILWAY. The Under-Seoretary of the Public Works Department wrote stating that early steps wonld be taken to settle the compensation claims for land that wonld be traversed by the GisborneRotorua railway. DAY OP MEETING. The Counoil decided to meet on the third Friday in eaoh month as heretofore. OFFICERS’ SALARIES. Cr Harding said the question of the remuneration to be paid the officers of the Council would come up for consideration that day. He thought that the engineer and clerk were mnoh underpaid, whilst the olaims of their assistant Bhould also be considered. He suggested that a committee should be appointed to go into the matter and report to the Oounoil. Or Harding spoke in terms of the highest praise of the work done by tho engineer and clerical staff. ;

Or MoDonald agreed with Or Harding, but deemed it advisable that the Council should consider the' question 'of the appointment of an assistant engineer. There was a good deal' of work going on throughout the County whioh was praoiioally Without supervision. He suggested if the committee were appointed that it should bear this matter in mind. Or H. Kenway: I should also like the committee to consider another matter, that of finance. - ! : It was decided to appoint a committee consisting of the following :—Ors Harding, Matthews, Lysnar, P.
