A fire which occurred at Kaponga at 4 o’clockgthis morning destroyed the offices of the Kaponga Mail newspaper and Wake and Gloiater’s, solicitors, buildings,'on either side, were also considerably damaged. The township was saved by the pulling down of the adjourning buildings. The insurances are: Mail office, £SO on the building and £165 on the stock and plant in the South British, Mr W. Staples, the proprietor, being heavy loser. He was working in the office till an early hour this morning, and it is surmised he dropped a match. Hastings, last night. In the Police Court John Eeid, for forging a cheque for £2, pleaded guilty, and was committed to Wei-, ington to be sentenced by a Supreme Court judge. Wellington, lust night. Regarding the sentences for robbery at the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday by a slip of the pen the name of the firm concerned was given as Abbot, Oram and Co. It should have been R. H. Abbots and Co. A regulation rocket apparatus has come to hand for the Harbor Board. The apparatus is similar to that supplied to the coastguard stations in ISngland, and an up-to-date rocket house is to be constructed at Waterloo Quay for its permanent abode. . ; The Trades Council last evening contended that there was not sufficient work offering in the colony at the present time for those already here, and the time was not opportune for a policy of; immigration. The matter was referred to the Executive Council for consideration, with the object of action being taken to prevent people coming to the colony through misrepresentation.
