NORTHERN RAILWAY.

A party of about three hundred excursionists proceeded to Kaipara Flats to-day for the opening of the railway extension, another hundred hoarding the train at Helensville. The Premier joined the party at Kaipara Flats. DeolariDg the line open, Mr Seddon said the whole vote of £BO,OOO would be spent, and ss much more as could bo profitably expended. The whole cost of the extension of the Heleos. ville norihwards line would be £174,607. Referring to the neoossity for Improved roads, he said the metal should be carried by rail at a nominal rata for local bodies and farmers Tho Premier,. replying to the cry of " a mile a year,” said that two sections had been opened in six months. He hoped to oome np annually to open a section, and stated that 160 men were now employed on the works. Surveyors had oompleted the survey to Hoteo, the work being put in hand further ahead. The Premier, who was heartily oheered, was entertained at lunob by residents, who gathered to the number of a couple of hundred,
