THE GOVERNOR AND THE MANLY ART. 'A NEGLEOTED ASSEMBLY.
’(Pen Press Association.) Auckland, last night,
In moving “ That the treasurer of the eommittee be instructed to pay an honorarium of £SO to the Moderator,” at a meeting of the General Assembly, Dr Nisbet, of Dunedin, urged that this was desirable, as there were several functions which the Moderator was called upon to perform, and . this necessitated Eome expense. The Governor, he pointed out, had paid no attention whatever to the visit of the Presbyterian Assembly to Auckland, while at the same time he found time to visit a boxing meeting. On the other side it was the oustom of the Moderator and Olerk of the Assembly to visit the Governor and Mayor of the city upon the first morning of the Assembly, and these visits were reoiprooated. Ge urged that these little courtesies should be extended, and that the Moderator should be provided with funds accordingly, The Olerk of tho Assembly (Dr Sidey) moved as an amendment, “ That consideration of the matter should be defer-ed ” Ge pointed out that already it required £I6OO for administration of the affairs of the Church, whioh in itself was a down right scandal, and that it was not desirable that further expenses should be incurred. The majority of the Assembly agreeing with Dr Sidey, the amendment was oarried and consideration of the motion was postponed.
