At the Presbyterian Assembly, Rev. J. Paterson presented the report of the advisory committee on church extension and Home mission grants. He stated that last year’s allocations totalled £llßs, but owing to. new districts which had been opened up and bad to be helped, this year’s allocation had been increased to £1835. Grants recommended by the committee for various Presbyteries were as follows, the figures for last year being in. parentheses : Auckland £295 (£265), Hawke's Bay £ll6 (£55), Taranaki £125 (£125), Wanganui £250 (£195), Welling, ton £lO5 (£120), Westland £135 (£100), Nelson £lls (£BS), Christchurch £lO5 (£165), Timaru £7O (£75). - The Assembly carried a motion in favor of the Bible in sohoois referendum movement.

A fire occurred in a two-storied board-ing-house in Hobson streot to-night, owned by A. Bachan and oooupied by Mrs A. M. Robinson. The house was practically gutted, and the bulk of the furniture destroyed. The insurance on the house was £l5O, in the South British offioo. The fire reaehed the house next door, and considerable damage was done to the contents, by water. Dunedin, last night.

Mr T. K. Sidey, who is seeking reeleotion for Caversham, addressed a large and enthusiastic meeting ‘ this' evening. His speeoh was a strong defenoe of the Government administration and policy. At a meeting of the Otago Institute a motion was passed to reoord the sense of loss whioh biological science has sustained by the loss of Captain Hutton, F.B.C.S. A copy of the resolution is to be sent to Miss Hutton with an expression of the Institute's deep sympathy with her and members of tho family in their bereavement. Hong Fong was fined £2. and Kong Fong £5 for having opium in their possession suitable for smoking. PalmeratoD North, last night.

Mr W, T. Wood addressed a crowded meeting here to-night, and was acoorded a favorable reception. He reviewed his actions in Parliament, and said he had nailed his eolors to the mast and would stand or fall with the Beddon Government. A vote of thanks and oonfidenoe was oarried, with three oheers.
