THE DERBY RACE,
By, telegraph, Press Aas’n, Copyright Melbourne, Nov. 6. Derby day woather was a mixture of wet, sunny, windy, end oven cold at Intervals. Shore was not muoh rain, but a groat dust storm raged. The Derby presented the biggest field, with one exception, uinoo 1695, but it would bo incorrect to desoribo the runners ns a high-olass lot, for there was not really ono With claims to being a smasher. Charles Stuart, Sootland, and.Thaokeray were on the outside, Dantzio and Pius on the inside, with the favorite iu the centre. Thera was some delay at the post, but eventually the field dashed off in line After turning ont of the straight, Pius assumed control, and soon had a three lengths lead of Infanta, who was clear of Sootland, the others being strung out, with Charles Stuart last. Infanta joined Pius at the far end, and then began to got on paoo at a great rate, but while Charles Stuart began to draw o'.oser to tho loaders, 81moda tailed away, and was already beaten. Five furlongs from homo Lady Wallace was last of the main body, and her supporters wore beooming a bit alarmed. However, a little further on she began to improve hor position, and was bandy to Infanta, Pius, Grama, and Charles Slnart as the turn for home was reached ; theD, almost immediately, Infanta drew out with two lengths lend, and as she held that advantage at the end of the lawn from the nearest of tho others, Grama and Lady Wallaea, shouts from thousands of throats anoouooed her viclory, but it was premature, for when fairly abreast of tho distance post Lady Wallaoe and Grama, who were racing abreast, wore oalled upon for a fWv effort, aad, responding gamely, they settled down to a grim struggle. They finished faster tbaa the leader, and oatoh ing her a few strides, from the post Lady Wallaoe snatched a victory by half-a length from Grama, who beat Infanta by three-parts of a length. Tho winner was well received. Only that Lady Wallace displayed considerable gameness, this year’s bine riband would have gone to an outsider in Grama, who was but little fanoiod. The win wsb full of merit, for if there was one horse in tha race more unlucky than another it was tha winner, who finished like a stayer. Infanta being in a prominent position at the business end of the journey astonished most people, while the plaeed horses finished as it wars in a heap, they were quite ton longths from the nearest of tho others. The Derby was not a fast-run raoo. and was in fael the slowest sinoe Malater's year, but the course, though in splendid order, was dead, and not favorable to fast time.
