THE LIBELLED KEA.
(Pec Press Association.') Wellington, last night. As it is generally supposed that the kea parrot attaoks living sheep, a war of extermination has been oarried on against the luckless birds. There seems to be a doubt whether there is any troth in the storieß of the bird’s misdeeds. At a meeting of the Philosophical Soolety, one scientific authority after another declared that after years of oareful investigation he had been unable to discover a shred of evidence in support of the alleged faot, every speaker acquainted with the bird and with , tbe region it inhabited, expressing complete disbelief of the story. Curiously enough, investigators do not seem hitherto to have compared notes on the subjeot. Their enquiries have been oonduoted independently, but have invariably led to the same oonolusion. If tbe kea legend has not been exploded, it has been seriously discredited, and it is suggested that County Counoils should consider the advisableness of stopping subsidies until there is unimpeachable evidence of the predatory oharaoter of the bird.
