’ Auckland, last night. A lady canvasser was fined £1 by Mr Kettle, S.M., for witnessing enrolment claims without seeing the elec-, tor sign the form. The Magistrate originally fixed the penalty at but reduced it when informed by the prosecution that defendant was in low circumstances.
John Churton, an Auckland bookmaker, was fined a total of £7O and costs by Mr Kettle, 8.M., for keeping an office contrary to the Gaming ana Lotteries Act and making a bet dependent upon the result of the working of the totalisator. Accused pleaded guilty. The Magistrate, in giving his decision, said (that bookmakers embarked on business prohibited by law, and must take the risk.
The barque Iquique reported that the disabled vessel’s name was not given. She was dismasted, and was steering west. The Collector of Customs, after making jenquiries, is unable to ascertain the locality of Hie,,,vessel; otherwise the l ■ Marine Department would probably have sent a tug to her .They; await the arrival of the 1 steaker'’’ Victoria from Sydney which may meet the disabled ship.
