The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, NOV. 4, 1905. HON. J. CARROLL.

Hon. J. Carroll, the Native Minister, returns to Gisborne to-day after an arduous Parliamentary session, which has been of very great interest to this district on account of the native land legislation which the Hon. J. Carroll was successful in pushing through. It is too early yet to speak ! of the practical effect of that legislation, but on the face of it it appears likely to be of enormous benefit to this district. Itjs acknowledged, that, even including the Premier himself, Mr Carroll ib the only member in the House who could have succeeded in getting the native land laws . amended this session. He is able to succeed by tael and perseverance where pny . fussy man would have failed completely. ; The new Aot is certainly a triumph for the ! member for this district, and it is a churlish spirit that will withhold congratulations on that score. While Mr Carroll has been applying himself to his duties a doublebarrelled opposition has been in progress with the object of deposing the Native Minister from his seat. , The enormous majorities by whioh he. has heretofore been eleoled have been suddenly apprised of his tuany shortcoming*, bat knowing that the

olootion is so near, thoy will bo nblo to 1 liston to all tboso talon good humorodly and then in calm oonfidonoo wait until the I numbers go up. Hia supporters have boon I told that they will be made to ‘squirm,” but I the moans by whloh this ia to bo brought I about still romuina a seorot. It is signifi- I cant that tho samo torin was mado uso of I by u littlo band that sought to wound tho Premier by an attack on hie family, but tho weapons recoiled, and tho people who I havo had tho “ squirming ” to do are those I 1 who mado tho tbroata. Mr Ourroll. him- 1 self waa doaoribod as a " political nonon-* | tity,” and it ia to bo hoped that tho many new electors on tho roll will attond one of tho Nativo Minister’s mootings and judge I for thomaelvcs as to the basenoss of tho libel. Those who know him woll would either treat such a statement with oonI tempt or Blmply regard it as a aubjeot for I mirtb. Tho raking firo to which tho Hon. J. Carroll baa boon Bubjooted to by the Opposition guna baa so far done no damage 1 to tho district’s representative, and baa perhaps done much good in oauaing I inoreaaod political activity. feel Bafo in predicting that whon the Native MiniI star again oomes forward to address the I Gisborne doctors ho will receive suoh an I ovation as waß never boforo extended to a Btatosman addrossing a Gisborne audionoe.
