THE ARAHURA.
jCPer,; Press, Association;) Greymoutq, Wednesday.
The Arahura, which made her initial trip to Greymouth yesterday morning, worked the bar splendidly. The wharf was lined with spectators, who gave throe cheers for the new :boa* r her captain, and the Union Steamship Company. The Harbor Board membercyisited the vessel in the afternoon and congratulated the local manager on\ the. Union Company’s enterprise. A large, number of the public inspected the vessel in the afternoon, and were entertained by. the company at after* noon tea.
The Mayor, Mr 3. A. Petrie, said it had been reported, injudiciously he thought, that the steamer was not to romain in the Coast trado. But he bad an assurance from the management that this was not the oaae. The public on the Coast during a good many years had strenuously advooated, and still strenuously advocated, the completion of the Midland Bail way, but if they got steamers with the conveniences and speed possessed by the Arahura, they would not r feel the absence of railway communication with,.the East Coast so muoh.
Captain, Lambert,..responding to the toast of 11 Success to the Arahura.” said that twenty years ego he did not think he would have tho pleasure of bringing such a magnificent steamor as the Arahura into Greymouth. Tho Harbor Board, passed a motion unanimously, oomplimontiDg the company on their enterprise. Last evening en enormous orowd visited the vessel, .and the Hospital, funds will benefit considerably by the small ehargo made for admission.
