(Feu Press Association.) Nelson, lasi night. The death occurred to»day of James Newport, in his 82nd year. He arrived in Nelson in 1842. He was well known throughout the colony. Thirteen bands have already entered for the band contest in oonneetion with-the Nelson oarnival im the first week in February. Over inches of rain fell in 24 hours, At 9 this morning the lower portion of the town was flooded, and at Wakapuaka the floods were the worst for 40 years. There were 14 slips along the road in seven miles from the oity, and beyond that the water was level with, the tops of the fences on flat land. The bridges at Thaekwood oreek were washed bodily away. Oldham’s oreek flowed down the rood for .five or six chains. At Motueka the downpour was exceptionally heavy, and the river protective works at Wakarewa are reported to have been carried.'away, and some portions of the town were floodei last night. The consumptive annex of the Nelsor hospital, ereoted as a cost of £I7OO (collected locally and with a subsidy),' waf opened this afternoon by the ohairman, Mr Piper. Wellington, last night.
