The insurances were : House, Phbenix, £300; furniture, ;in the Royal Exchange Assurance. The shareholders of the South British Insurance Company ' unanimously confirmed the resolutions enabling the company to take other risks, excepting life insurance. , . ’ New Plymouth, last .night, A fire at Waitara at 3 o’clock this morning totally destroyed an unoccupied shop and dwelling, owned by -W." D. Webster, New Plymouth ; also a building owned by Mrs Baker, New Plymouth, occupied as offices by, the Waitara Bor. ough Council and othern.'; Adjoining buildings narrowly escaped.,, Webster’s building was insured for £250 in the Law Union and Crown ; and Baker’s for £l5O in the North British office. The contents were saved.

Wellington, last night.' Charles McDonald, a, carpenter by trade, unmarried, was drowned at Island. Bay. yesterday. He and three other men, Jones, Samuel McMillan, and Alfred Lason, had gone out fishing in a small boat early, in the morning to a little island-in the bay, and on tHe return journey their boat ewamped, there being a very heavy swell on, - and capsized. McMillan and Lason clung to the boat, and Jones and McDonald, who were brothers-in-law, started to swim towards a yacht moored close by. Jones reached the yacht, but McDonald, becoming exhausted or being seized with cramp, sank and was drowned. His body has not yet been recovered. ; Ohristohurch, last night;
The death is announced of Captain F. W. Hutton, F.R.S., just before the Rimutaka reached Capetown. He was President of the New Zealand Institute and Curator of the Christchurch Museum.
Blenheim, last night.
At a meeting of the A. and P. Association Committee on Saturday, a letter was received from the International ; Harvester Company, defining the agreement entered into by subscribing companies and- justifying its operations. The president said the present time was very inopportune to deal with the matter, seeing that all implement makers, including the Harvester Trust, were exhibiting at the forthcoming Marlborough Show. Members approved of this sentiment, and no action was taken. Dunedin, last night. John Blackwood (aged 64) was found dead in a house in Union street early this morning. Death' was apparently due to hemorrhage of the lungs.
