ROEBUCK ROAD BRIDGE.

T PUBLIC MEETING.

UNANIMOUSLY SUPPORTED.

There was a large attendance at the pnblio meting held laat night in connection with the proposed Roebuck road bridge. The Mayor presided, and explained the object of tire meeting, mentioning that be thought they would be unable to look to the County Council for support; that body was indeed objecting to its proportion to the coat of the existing bridges. Cr Sheridan made a strong speech in favor of the proposed bridge, on which he said the Council was unanimous; not one had objeoted to it. On looking up the reoorda he found that the agitation had commenced twelve years ago, Of oourae there would be a slight note of discord by the cheese paring, conservative, pessimistic old landlord who viewed a miorosoopio increase of rates with alarm, and did not care for the progress of the place. (Laughter.) They could only look on the rate as a mere bagatelle compared with the advantages to be obtained. After enumerating some of the many arguments for the bridge, he urged them to show their faith in the stability and progress of the plaoe by voting for the bridge. (Applause.) Mr W. Douglas Lysnar warmly supported the proposal, though he regretted that the spherne would not inolude one over the Haiti. He pointed out that the rate would be ao small that no one could object to it. A house worth £350 worild only pay 2s 7d, and he cited other illustrations. Ho was heartily in favor of the bridge. (Applause.) Mr W- L. Rees said that as wherever the bridge was placed it would be near his property, he had rofrained from pressing an opinion one way or the other; but now that the site had been aooepted as settled he felt at liberty to speak. He showed what facilities tbe new bridge would give. It would substantially increase the value of propnriv at the upper ebd of the town without detracting from the value of any, part. He urged that they should show a prog essive spirit and pass the 'necessaty vote ti enable the Oounoil to build the bridge at once. (Apclause.) Mr E. P. Joyce said bo favored building a bridge somewhere at the upper putt ul the town. He had at first thought the site should have been lower down to Bave •.!_ arnssnanlmg htlfc fehfl

Ho thought the bridge would largely enhance property at the upper end without depredating tho value of any i other property, and thus they would have an increase of rntos that would help to pay for the bridge.
