OUSTED BOOKMAKERS.

Auckland, last night. A largely attended meeting of the Auok land Raoing Club was held in the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon for the purpose of considering the decision of the club committee a few days ago not to allow bookmakers to ply their oalliDg on Ellerslie raoecourse. The meeting bad been convened in response to a requisition Bigned by some 50 members of tbe club, Bod at the commencement a motion was moved with a view to rescinding the committee’s decision, anl allowing bookmakers to trade on the course as hitherto. Some speeches both for and against tht motion wo-o delivered, but the argument really -ested with two g’ntlemen, tt Hon. E. Mitohelron. who defended f committee’s ac'ion, and Mr W. H’ck who championed the cause of the b makers. The question went ti the be and resulted in a majority for the 1 mitteo’s deoision, so that bookmaker; not be permitted to do business at E lie next Saturday. The voting wbb f the exclusion of bookmakers an against, leaving a majority of 21 fo committee’s action.
