FARMERS’ UNION.

THE QUESTION OP POLITICS.

PROTEST PROM GISBORNE BRANCH.

A special meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on •Saturday to hear a report from their delegate regarding the attitude of the delegates j at the recently-appointed oonferonoo to consider the question of the Union selecting a candidate for tho forthcoming contest. There was a fairly representative attendance, upwards of 20 members being present. The President (Mr W. D. Lysnar), as delegate to tho roceat political conference, gavo an outline of what had been done. He contended that the majority of the members of tho oonfemooe had mado up their mluds as to the result arrived at before even disouaeiag the mattor, and the doiegatos attending the conference were not properly appointed, and ia some oases represented braaohoa whioh woro defunct, Undor the circumstances it was useless his going baok to tho oonforonoe. i Mr B. M. Burrell ooaourred in tho remarks made by the President, and moved the following resolution: •t That, after hearing the explanation of the delegate of this brahch attending tbe political conference, this branch is of /opinion that it is useless for our delegate ilo further attend suoh oooferooce, as it is perfectly plain that an effort is being made to use tho Union for par:y purpose?, which {s to bo deplored, and this branch takes this opportunity of intimating that they will npt feel bound by tho finding of the delegates upon this politioal question, as we feel the politioal attitude of the Union Is not being considered impartially, and it Is apparent an individual candidate is being oonaidered before the real interests of the UnioD.” Mr S. Liddle eooonded the motion. Mr P. T. Kenway opposed the motion, urgiog that there was no necessity for the Union to take suoh a drastio step. t Mr 0. J. Parker aleo spoke against the Gisborne branch’s delegate withdrawing from the conferenceAfter some discussion the motion was •• put to the meeting and carried, Messrs Parker and Kenway being the only dissentients.
