The case of J. E. Ecdstone v. Matahaere, claim £5 for horse hire, damages, etc., came before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. The horse had been hired to defendant on Jnly 10th last, and was not retnrned, being found three days later at Pakarae. The case was adjourned to obtain farther evidence.
Among the passengers by the Zealandia on Wednesday was a highly-esieemed settler of this district, Mr W. Dean Lysnar, who had been making a long soj'mrn in California with members of hiß family. Although keenly apprec’ative of New Zealand Mr Lysnar also has a very i.iigh opinion of California, and the opportunities there offered for advancement.
.It the Native Appellate Court yesterday, tref.ore Judges Edgar and Jackson Palmer, wRl 1 Messrs Neville and Nicholson as assessors, judgment was delivered in the appeal regarding the Heta Te Kani will case. The Court upheld the decision of Judge Jones, and the appeal was dismissed, £lO of the deposit being allowed to the respondents, and the balanoe of £lO being returned to appellants. Judgment was received by Mr E. J. Ohrisp and Mr | Stock representing the parties interested.

The secretarial duties in connection with the races yesterday were oarried out in a highly efficient manner by Mr J. Walker Bain. Although it rained heavily in the morning it turned out a perfect day. There was a large attendance of ladies, and some very pretty costumes were worn.
Mr W. Lissant Clayton resumes his electoral campaign next week, addressing tho Murewai electors at' the sohool on Tuesday evening, Mangapapa sohool on Thurseay evening, and at Waerenga-o-kuri Friday. The following week Mr Clayton commences his itineranoy of the Coast.
Although the hurdle raoe yesterday re solved itself into a matoh between two horses, it was as fine a race as could be seen on any coarse. Both horses jumped cleanly, and there was really nothing to ohoose between the chances of the horses until the winning-post was reaohed. The last two hurdles—in the straight —were taken close together, and amidst great- exoitement Boseplot won by a head.

A case arising out of the costs of repairs to a bicycle (15s) was heard at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M. Wm, McDonald (Mr Finn) sued Messrs Miller and Craig (Mr Stook) for £lO, or return of a bioycle which plaintiffs had repaired in Napier, and whioh they refused to deliver to plaintiff until the freight and repairs were paid. Plaintiff stated he bought the machine from defendants at tbe auction, mart, receiving a twelve months’ guarantee. Defendant had ocoasioh to make use of the guarantee, and the machine was sent to Napier to be repaired, and defendants refused to allow the bioycle to leave their hauds before the money was paid. After hearing the evidence His Worship said he could not find that the cost of repairs to tbe machine bad been incurred with tbe authority of the plaintiff, and gave judgment for the amount claimed £lO, reducible to Is on return of the bioyole within 24 hours, costs £ll7s.
