A young woman named Lily Young was charged at tho Police Court with being concerned in somewhat extensive jewellery thefts. She was charged with stealing jewollery and money totalling £57 11s 2d from tho dwelling of Margaret McKay on Octobor 11, and stealing a quantity of jewellery valued at £8 16s, the property of Mrs McLaren on October 14. Accused, who reserved her defence pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. She was allowed bail in two sureties of £SO each.

Mrs John Driscoll, who was seriously burnt at her residence, Grey street, on Tuesday, died in tho hospital last night.

Masterten, last night, In consequence of the heavy rain last night a portion of tho racecourse is under water, and the meeting has been postponed till Saturday.

Wanganui, last night. There was an exceptionally heavy downpour of rain x last evening, flinches falling during tho night. Low lying parts of the district are flooded. No serious damage has been done, except to market gardens,which are under water. Two and a-half inches fell at Taumarkuki, and the river is now rising. As the weather is now fine, no great flood is expected. Christohuroh, last night.

After three days very fine weather, rain set in on Tuesday, and has continued intermittently since. It is now very heavy. The exceptionally wet season has thrown back farming operations. Winter - sown wheat has rotted in the grown, necessitating resowing over a large area. The harvest will consequently be late. Lambing so far has been very satisfactory.

Oamaru, last night. A six-roomed house and store owned by John Dumbleton was burnt to the ground at Hampden last night. Nothing was saved. The stock and furniture were insured in the Royal office for £1725. The insurance on the building is unknown at present. The fire has not yet been accounted for.

Dunedin, last night. At the Pharmacy Board’s instance, James Neill, herbalist, and his assistant, were oharged at the Police Court this morning with making false de» claration as regards identures. The cases were adjoumod till November 10th, at the instance of counsel for the defence.

Timaru, yesterday.

' The second day of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show was held to-day in very bad weather, a cold, sleety rain falling, which completely spoilt the Show from alspectator’s point of view, and the attendance was small; In draught stallions Dalmuir Prince was first and champion. The champion mare was W. Butterick’s Countess. Gipsy King was first and champion in thoroughbred stalions, and Mambrino King in carriage stallions. In the hackney stallion class J. Withell’s two imported horses, Defender 11. and Lord Desborough, were placed first and second, and were greatly admired* The show of pigs and produce was good, and of cattle poor.
