BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, when the following members were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J, Townley). Ors Oolley, Sheridan, Webb, Whinray, Bright, Lyßnar, Rees, and Harding.
WATER SUPPLY.
Mr R. Hay, engineer for the water supply for the Borough, attended tho meeting, and made several suggestions in rdgaici to the details of the scheme, the same being approved of by the Council* BOARDING-HOUBEB.
The District Hca’th Officer wrote as follows:—“ Re the minimum of -cnbio space required in lodging, boarding, and publio houses, the Department of Pnblio Health consider that the minimum of cubic space that should be provided is 500 oubio feet per head for rooms that are used for day or night only, and 750 oubio feet for rooms that are used during both day aud night. The head office has instructed me to advise you on this matter with a view to your passing a by-law regulating the amount of cubic space that is required.” RETURNING OFFICERSHIP.
Four applications wore reoeived for the position of returning officer, and Mr H, M. Porter was appointed. BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.
Mr G. Darton waited upon the Conncil in regard to the work being carried on at the Point by the Beautifying Association. He asked the Council to grant the sum of £25.
Cr Bright spoke favorably in regard to the work done by the association, and moved that the sum asked for be granted. Cr Rees seconded the motion.
Cr Whinray desired to know what the Council had contributed towards the beautifying of the river bank. The Mayor thought the Goucoil and the publio had reoeived full value for any expenditure which had taken place. Or Whinray said the river hank should have been built upon and used for revenue purposes.
The motion, on being put to the meeting, was declared by the Mayor to be carried.
Several councillors present did not vote.
OVERSEER’S REPORT,
The Borough Overseer reported as follows Stafford street: I have given this street a rough formation an authorised by your Council, and whioh should take away the water oomplained of. Stanley road: The culvert on this road is finished and opeued up to the water, whioh has a freo course. A good deal of repairing work has been done since your last meeting. Tenders should be before your Council at this meeting for tarring and painting the bridges. It will be necessary ta do some repairs to the Taruhern footbridge before it is tarred and painted." INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
0 The Borough Inspeotor reported as j follows " I have been inspecting in j various parts of the borough, and find the 1 moat of plaoes in a satisfactory condition of cleanliness. There have been several j complaints lately of people who drain from 1 their premises the household alopß and • washing water into the open etreet drains and water tables. This practice will have to be discontinued, and I am now issuing notioes to that effeot. Messrs Aston Bros, have completed their contraot for painting 1 the nine borough cottages according to specifications and in a satisfactory manner. I would recommend that the amount of their contraot bo passed for payment. Tenders for the erection of three cottages at the abattoirs will be laid before you this evening for your consideration. There have been two fires in the borough sjnee your la3t meeting, ono occurring on the morning of the 18th inst., end the other last evening. The former was a house in Roebuck road, belonging: to Mrs R. Moore, whioh was burned to tho ground, very, little of tho contents being saved. The cause of the fire is unknown. The latter occurred in a bedroom at the Turanganui Hotel, which was quickly extinguished before much damage was dopc.I have to report one case of typhoid, which has been notified, and is.being attended to at the hospital. During the last week I have visited and inspected all the dairies supplying mils to the Borough, and have to report as follows:—At the present time there am 11 licensed dairies, eaoh with the following number of cows : Bell 50, Wil* son 20, T. Steele 14, Lumsden 12, Liddell 11, W. Martin 12, Baty 18, Goldie 23, ' Pender 35, Willau 50, Griffin 14, or a total of 259 cows, and the average number of ' gallons of milk supplied to tbe Borough is *' about 400 per diem. I have also taken tests of milk from each supplier on his euual rounds, and fiud that tho specific gravity of the milk by the lactometer test to bo—Bell 31 5. Wilson 33-0, Lumsden 32, Steele 31, Liddell 31, W. Martin 81-5, W. Baty 32'0, Goldie 31'6, Peuder 32‘0. Wiliam 33 0, Griffin 30'5. Tbe above I consider a very fair test. The cows all look healthy, and in a very fair condition. ® The bales, where the cows are milked, are oloan, some of them having been newly whitewashed, I also inspected the dairies where the milk is oooled and kept, and find them oleao, along with tbe utensils therein. I consider that the milk trade at the present time is conduced in a satisfactory manner.”
