Referring to the petition for compassionate allowance for the widow and children of John Lane, who wae killed by a fall of earth at tho Seddon railway works, the Minister of Pubiio Works Btates that they will be entitled to an amount between £2OO and under the Workera’ Compensation for Acoidents Aot, and the offioer in charge of tho works is authorised to make an advance for immediate relief if necessary.

Bandmaster King, judge at the Feilding contest, writes to the local press with reference to a statement that the Blenheim bandsmen were not satisfied that they were properly beaten by the Feilding band, and that Mr OrichtoD, of Wanganui, gave a private judgment in favor of Blenhoim. Mr King, while complimenting the Blenheim bandsmen on their performance, justifies bis decision.
