He was a member of the Provincial Council in the early days, and Secretary for Pabiie Wo>ki for two years. In 1869 be was elected member for Lyttelton. Five years later be was called to the Legislative Council. Ho was one of the original promoters of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, of the Union Insurance Company, and of the New Zealand Shipping Company. He was connected also with other successful commercial enterprises. He was twice married, leaving a widow and two stepsons.
