Mr Chapman said the Commonwealth subsidy was £26,636. He quoted figures showiog the imports from Canada had deoreased from £353,000 in 1903 to £222,000 in 1904. The exports to Canada decreased from £68,000 in 1900 to £29,350 in 1904. The mail matter oarried from Australia by the Vancouver line in 1904 was 38,0001b5, and two-fifths of it went to the Uaited States, while 80,0001bs was claimed by tho 'Frisco lino. Mr Sydney Smith, late PostmasterGenoral, explained that when the trouble with tho Orient Company occurred he thought it possible to arrange for a great improvomeut in tho Vancouver service. Tho Union Oompauy, howover, wanted £280,000 for two years, aud required two years to make provision for now steamers. This was impracticable. Then when the question of renewing the existiug contraot was discussed they asked for an increased subsidy of £20,000 and eventually agreed I to accept an additional £6OOO. If that was not granted tho Hcrvioo would have to be abandoned.
