.(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. • The new operating theatre whicb lias cost £BOOO was opened at the hospital yesterday.
Mr C. J. Parr, Opposition candidate for Auckland Wesf, addressed a crowded meeting of doctors last night. He declared being in favor of tbo freehold and reform of tho Legislative Council, aDd said that he thought tho liquor question should bo left to the people to decide. A vote of thanks arid confidence was carried, Tho long-doferred laying of a commemorative tablet in the now Parnell post-rffico was performed by Sir Joseph Ward yesterday afternoon, in tho presence oi a large number of spectators. In the course of his reply to the railway deputation to-day, Sir Joseph Ward said that when the tunnol duplication was finished at Auckland and in sequence at Wellington; motor oar services would he put on and crossings would bo made to enable tho trains to pass the motor-oars. They would run every 20 minutes or half an hour.
Dannevirke, last night. Harvey’s hold at Weber wsb burned down shortly aftor midnight. Tho inmates ail got out safely. Very little furniture was saved. The insurances on the building, furniture and stock total £I4OO. The origin of the fire is unkown.
Hawera, last night. Mr Major, M.H.R., delivered a political address at Hawera last m'ght. Tho candidate is a Government supporter, and was awarded a vote of thanks and confidence. The other two candidates, Messrs McGuire, ex-M.H.R., and Robbins, Mayor of Hawera, are Oppositionists.
