Already agricultural returns show that the only cropping areas which are in> creasing in England are those devoted to fruit. It is the simple truth that, without great impoverishment, the territorial lords of Britain could to-morrow sweep Britain dean of poverty by simply granting the State partial resumption of land. It would, however, in the opinion of the ruling class, be such a dreadful interference with private rights and vested interests that such a scheme would never be listened to. Rather lot Britains (i) decay at Home, or (2) allow Australia to work out the salvation of the people whom Britons of another class are too tired and too selfish to bother about. To tell a British peer that the land is in reality the people’s birthright would make him think you were the biggest kind of lunatic. A lady writer in the Wellington News tell the following story A girl about to be married last week was horrified to find when the arrangements were complete, that there was no bridegroom. On the third day he came back to town, with a friend, in a motor car, and the skin off his nose. He casually explained that his friend had asked him to go for a trip. He said he couldn’t go, as he was to be married.
