THE WAIAPU ELECTION

;(To the Editor Gisborne Times.) Sir,—Mr Sievwright. in your Saturday’s issue, shows his teeth pretty plainly towards the candidate, and Carroll’s Committee. I have had long talks to some of the local Liberals and I have been informed that Mr Sievwright was at one time President of the local Liberal Association, and that through-some of his actions ho was called on to resign. It is therefore quite evident he has a grievance, whioh he vindicates by finding fault with the Liberals, the candidate and Committee, in my opinion simply because he was compelled to retire from the local Liberal Association. lam pleased Mr Sievwright has given the public a sample of the hidden talents he possesses, with a word of advice. He says, “ Mr Carroll’s Committee would have shown wisdom by not rousing sleeping dogs.” This throat would very much imply that Mr Sievwright has changed his views, and that the poet’s quotation would justly apply—- “ This dog and man at first were friends; But when a pique began The dog to gain some private ends, Went mad and bit the man. The wound it seemed both sore and sad ; To every Christian eye. And while they swore the dog was mad, They swore the man would die. But soon a wonder came to light That showed the people lied, The man recovered of the bite The dog it was who died.” —I am, etc., Settles.
