The Editor TimesSir,—The remarks of “Alpha ” oonoerning Mr Lissant Clayton are mean. Whatever view one holds of Mr Clayton’s opinions, all must admit he has made the greatest success on the platform of any young man who appeared under like conditions. If he would knock off talking twaddle about making people he is opposing Bquirm, and apply himself to a constructive platform, such as the freehold, he would soon beaome a strong man, able to fight an admittedly strong man. Ha is certainly not entitled to. “Alpha’s” jeers, and deserves.every encouragement.—l ami etc., ADMIRER. Referring to the Waikaremoana meeting the Guardian states It is indeed a great pity this action was not taken earlier, so that the combined petition of the East Coast might hare been laid before the House. As it is at present, the two ends of the district have sent in their claim, and the town, in whose locality the lake lies, is absolutely unrepresented. We now know from Mr J. H. Brown himself why that is so ; and that gentleman certainly owes his fellow settlers an apology. The fact that he was annoyed because the Government land purchase officers were looking at his run with a view to compulsory purchase was no reason why a telegram, asking him to call a public meeting, should have been consigned to the waste paper basket. As a matter of fact it is not many years ago since Mr Brown offered his run in toto to the Government for closer settlement, but for various reasons not accepted. It is a great pity he so nearly spoiled a great movement by allowing it to appear as if Wairoa was not only flouted by Napier and Gisborne, but itself absolutely apathetic on the question of harnossing Waibaremoana.”
