Napier, last night. Mr J. MoGrath oponed the campaign for Napier eleotcrnto last night. He doolarod himself a nominee of the Liberal and Labor League. He was in favor of tbe leasehold and against the freehold, of free education from the primary eohcol to the University, elective Legislative Council, popular election of public bodies, and referendum. A voto of thanks was nooordod.
Tbo two-storey rosidonoe of Mr J. H. Vautier was partially gutted by fire early this morning. The outbreak .started on tho outside, but spread to tbe main bnilding, and bad done oonsiderablo damage beforo it was subduod. Tho insurance on tho houso was 11600, and on tho furniture £SOO in tbo Phoenix.
Haworajaet night. When approaching TaDgahoo bridge this morning with a load of milk for the Mells factory, J. P. Baker's horse shied and went over the oll£f. The driver jumped oat juet in time. Tbe oart was smashed to pieces and the .horse drowned in the river below. The milk oans were washod out to soa.
Wellington, lasl'nigbt. Reuter’s Tolegram Company has declared the usual interim dividend at the rate of five per oent. per annum. In referenoe to the proposed parliament of labor, tho president of the Now Zealand Employers' Federation telegraphed to day as follows to the Wellington Employers' Association: " Tho majority voto of the Federation is opposed to a conference at present. The soope is too wide- It is too ate for legislation this session, and such matters are too important to be dealt with summarily.” The Premier has been advised Bcoordingly.
Dunedin, last night. Before the Arbitration Court, In tho case of Aggie Maria Hosking v. the Rising Sun Gold Dredging Company, in whioh claimant’s husband, a fireman, whilst driving tije maobinery of the dredge, was killed by being oaught in tbe maohinery, the Court found that In emergencies all bands on the dredge had to uso their own judgment, but deceased, in going to oloar the shaft, set about it in an altogether wrong way. This did not affect the question, however. His action resulted in that kind of ooour* rence wbioh is nominally '-Wiled' an accident. The t.coident arose out of the man’s employment. Claimant was awarded £4OO and costs.
Very heavy rain last night, coupled with a partial blookiog of tbe outfall of the storm-water channel at St. Clair, caused floods on the western portion of the flats and some damage to corporation property, V Inveroargill, last night. .Mr Hatob, lessee of tbo Macquarrie Islands, indignantly denies the allegations suggested,by Mr Hogg in a question in the Houße, regarding the destruction of penguins, particularly cruelty oonneoted with the boiling-down.
