CRICKET.
The present season promises to be an exceptionally proaperoas one, and the number of new clubs springing up in the country districts speaks well for the future of the game in Poverty Bay. There will be little alterations in the ! Taruheru eleven, but the personnel of the United team will show a considerable change. The latter will have a very strong batting side, and if they can unearth a couple of good bowlers they should be a hard team to beat. As the majority of country players are joining town clubs it is likely that the Waerenga-a-hika team will be unable to put a team in the field. The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association will be held in the Masonic Hotel on Friday night
A cricket match was played at the Taruheru crioket ground yesterday afternoon, when iheTaruheru team, captained by A. H. Hodge, played the All-comers’ team, captain by J. Lang. Hodge winning the toss, elected to bat, but Fenwick w»3 the only man to make double figures, I making 12 (aot out). Davie, a new man, proved too muoh for them, getting seven wiokete for 16 runs. For the All-comers’ team Lang played a good innings of 30 ; also O’Hara (10), McConnell (18), Olsan (15), and Hogg (12) all played very good erioket, aud the match ended in a win for the All-oomers. Afternoon tea was provided by the Taruheru Club, and greatly enjoyed by the vUiting team. Soore»

The land policy, not only of the pre-1 sent, but of the future, is fraught with too 1 much importance to be a shuttlecock i between Government and Opposition, for which reason ! we are glad that Parlia- ’ ment as a whole is called upon to deal ’ with it.—Hokitika Leader. They say that it will cost almost as : mU ch to tell when a horse is being pulled I I; as it does to get him pulled, judging by f fbe patent fees that Tim O’Connor has had to fork out.-Observer. “ As an immigration agency, the Salvation Army, with its remarkable organiB JSonV cannot, perhaps,, be surpassed. ?’ And in this connection, it should not be l < overlooked:that it has influence in Euroja pean countries as wellj as in the British jslcs,—Wapier Herafd.
