GENERAL BOOTH’S SCHEME.
AN EXPLANATION.
By telegraph* Press 'Ass’ n,, jC.opyri'ght Received 9.8 p.m.. Oot. 11. London, Oct 11. Mr Ooghlan has issued a statement defining the Agonte-Geueral’s attitude towards General Booth. Mr Ooghlan a fortnight ago informed Colonel Taylor, who called oo Gonerat Booth's behalf, that ho was not officially awere how the proposals would be received in Australia, and that when officially instructed ho would oommunioate with General Booth. Meanwhile he suggested maturing the scheme ready for discussion should the Agents be instructed to 00-operate. Mr Coghlan asI sured Colonel Taylor of great sympathy with immigration by some of Australia’s representatives, but the emigrants must be of a class approved by the Australian people. Besides this official statement several Agents-General had subsequently expressed to Colonel Taylor their individual opinions.' Sir Horace Tozer Buggeßted that the existing system of nominated passages should be utilised for a small experiment under Salvation Army auspices. Mr Dobson, of Tasmania, urged that a paramount necessity wascareful selection. Received 10 p.m., Oct. 11. Mr James, Agent-General of Western Australia, deolated that General Booth’s sobemes must not bo rushed. The idea of putting down 6000 families in one season was entirely out of the- question. There should be a proper selection and small beginnings. Mr Taverner said that any scheme must be carefully thought out, and a general policy established. The Viotorian Government would weloome immigrants with means, but had a duty to their own people who were desirous of settling on the land. Mr Coghlan remarks: It appears that none of the Australian representatives turned the cold shoulder to the soheme. They are awaitiDg specific intimation and definite proposals of the Salvation Army.
