'(Pen Press Association. 1 ) - Napior, last night. Mr O. M. Whittington; has been elected to the vacancy on the Education Board, the voting being: Whittington 185, Burnett 150. Messrs Powdrell Bros.’ traction engine fell through the Waitangi river bridge this morning, l but the driver escaped with slight injuries. Themes, last night. The Charitable Aid Board decided, in view of the increased pensions paid to inmates of the Home, to charge ten shillings a week, the actual cost of main tenance of inmates. The Board will allow a rebate of five shillings a month to pensioners for good conduct and conformity with the regulations of the institution. Dnnodip, last night. The weather looks promising for tomorrow’s holiday. The principal attractions are the races at Wingatui, and Labor Day Sports at Evansdale. Wellington, last night. Mr Locke, a poultry farmer, was killed on the railway line at Levin to»day. He was crossing on a bicycle and was struck by an engine. Sir Joseph Ward, speaking at a dinner given to him by the Medical Association, after detailing what the Government had done to combat disease, and especially consumption, said he hoped during the year the Department would.be in.a posi** tion to attend to a comprehensive system of inspection and analysis of foodstuffs and inspection of schools and sohool children. Skin diseases and dentition required consideration, particularly the latter, which tvas recognised as one of the causes of physical degeneration at Home and was making itself felt here.
