GRADING OF BUTTER.

DAIRY DEPARTMENT’S OBJECTION TO A £2OO PRIZE.

[(Per Press ABWcialioi}.) Palmerston North, last night. Mr Kinsella has written to tho A. an. P. Association, disapproving ol tho aooept anoo of Collett and Co.’s offer of a prizo of £2OO for batter at tho winter show. Ho remarks; "Those people are about tho only exporters who have been dissatisfied I with our methods of grading produoe, partionlarly dairy bnttor, whiok is the o'asa ohiefly handled by them, and I consider that this is a diroot moans of 9 getting at ’ the good work of our grading system.’ In his reply to tho firm ho says that he had no hesitation in saying, in his capaoity as tho responsible head of tho dairying service, that neither tho offor nor the motive are in order ; far from it. That is so far as any good results being derived from snob a a sohemo whioh would tend to bring abont any improvement in tho system of our 00-operative inotruotion and grading, or assist in strengthening the mutual feeling that now exists between the producers and the dairying division. He submits that were tho proposal carried out no praotioal good would aooruo to the dairymen of New Zealand, and that it would only tend to unsettle a system wbioh is to-day giving entire satisfaction to all but an exceedingly Bmall portion of the producers and exporters. Considerable diaoussion followed tho reading of those letters, and it was finally decided, on tho motion of Mr Johnston, seoonded by Major Dunk, *• That in view of the report from the Government Dairy Commissioner re Mesß.w Collett and Co. s offi-r, the Association regrets it is unable to accept the same on the terms offered, but in order to in any way assist in placing our butter direct to the West of England ports with better advantage to the producers. we would gladly consider any j further offer the firm may he inclined to I make.”
