A good deal of evidence showing the variable nature of the pota’o market was given ot Rangiora, Potatoes for seed last year were given away, and the crop is now worth about £l2 to £l3 per ton, Meßsra Common, Shelton and Co., Ltd., will hold a sale of horses at the Masonic etableß on Saturday, 21st inst. The entries include a line of 20 three aod four year old harness horses, unbroken. Mr J. B, Kells will conduct the sale.
At a meeting of the Ohristohurch City Council the Mayor announced that the proprietors of the Theatre Royal bad agreed to erect a new theatre on the opposite side of the road, at a cost of about £20,000. It was stated that the building would bo finished by Exhibition time, and that it would be tbo finest theatre in the colony.

The s.s. Weka airived from Napier via the Coast last evening. The vessel landed cargo at Wainui Bay aod Whangaw6hi, but did not work Boat Harbor as a very heavy sea was running there. Regarding tho work of boriDg for petroleum, the Taranaki Horald of Saturday, says Mr Fair suoceedcd on Thursday evening in oleariug the damaged packer, oto., from the boro at Moturoa. The Gio. casing will be replaced and tho now packer lowered, and in a few days it is hoped tho pump will bo got to work. Indications continue favorablo.”
There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Ma'awhero Cricket Club on Tuesday evening. Mr Arnold was reflected president, and Mr B. Steggall seorotary. It was decided to open.the season on tho 14th with a tnatoh agaiost allcomers. Messrs Hugh Cameroo and G. McConnell presented a couple of bats for competition.
At tho last meeting of tho Hawke’s Bay Education Board, the Education Dopa v t' ment wrote drawing attention to the fact of Children not attending 'the Nubaka native school. It was decided to inform the Department that the school in question is not a public school within ths control of tho Board under section 147 of tho Education Act. With a view to seouring the prompt payment of rates, the ohairman of the Lovels County Oouooil, at its meeting yesterday, suggested that looai bodies should be given power to give a rebate of 6 per oent for payment by u oertain date. The suggestion was endorsed by the Council, who during tho past six months: paid £B3 interest on the overdraft, while they had over £4OOO outstanding in rates. James MoEwau, a single man, 21 years old, was handling a revolver on Saturday night at Wellington, when a cartridge exploded and the bullet entered the man's right oheek near tho mouth. He was taken to the hospital and died four hours after the oceurrenoe. Deceased recently arrived from New South Wales. At tho inquost on the body the jury fonnd that deceased died from a self inflicted gunshot wound, but was unable to say whether the shot was accidentally fired. The attention of ladies is directed to the announcement that Miss Allen will at 2.30 this afternoon give a demonstration of the Imperial system of dross-outting, in Townley’s Hall (over Dalrymple’s), and also in the evening at 7.30. At the same time an exhibition of work done under the system by pupils will be made. Those who have gone in for this system are warm in praise, owing to its simplicity and excellence.

" Well,” answered the Premier," you may taka it for granted that the elections will be held before December 2nd; how olose to that date I cannot say," A charge against John O’Sullivan of ohild desertion was again brought up at the Polioe Court yesterday, and the presiding justices, Mr H. Lewis and. Captain Chrisp, ordered the return of O'Sullivan to Tasmania in oustody of Constable Dwan, who bad been sent across from Tasmania for the purpose, and gave evidence in regard to the issue of the warrant ond the Tasmanian Act bearing on such cases. It will be remembered that the aooused was arrested at Rakauroa on September 17th by Constable Doyle, Mr H. H. Wall at Waeranga-o-kuri,— “ I am not a profocsional politician without a stake in the country, nor an old warrior in politics with a lot of pat phrases and sentiments to give you, but simply o man of tbe people, one of yourselves, with an earnest doßiro to see a change in our administration. It has been in power long enough for the good of the country. There should be no three quarter million surplus at the end of the financial year when there is such urgent need for publio works throughout the colony, and in this distriot in particular.” The Union Cricket Club open the season at 2.30 this afternoon with a match between teams selected by the captain and vioe-oaptain. The players will be soleotod from the following Captain’s team: Lang, M. Sheridan, O’Hara, J. Coleman, B. Rice, R. Olsen, A. Pirie, J. Lang, R. Sims, G. Bailey, Carwell, Ardern, Wright, and Amodeo. A very baQdy and neatly got up little volume has been published by Messrs Cleave and Co., of Auckland, under the title of " Whore to go and where to stay in New Zealand.” The book is profusely illustrated, and expressly issued for tbe use of tourists, travellers, and business men. Tbe desoriptive matter 19 tersely written up, and conveys a great deal of information coDoerning all points of striking interest to tourists and others. Tbe publication should prove of great value to travelers. We regret to note that tbe publishers have not given prominenoe to Morere and Te Puia Springs, and hope that in a future edition these important hoalth resorts will be given duo prominenoo. In other respects the book is a great credit to the compiler, publisher, and printer.
I Mr E. N. Anderson forwarded to I the Education Board his resignation as instructor of the Napier Technical I and Art School. Mr Patterson moved, I seconded by Mr McLernon :—“ That judging from Mr Anderson’s letter the Board are of the opinion that Mr I Anderson has not found the conditions under which he was employed to be I satisfactory. The Board ask Mr Anderson instead of resigning to submit a scheme for the consideration of the I Board of what he suggests would remove any difficulty which he is at present under, and that a committee consisting of Messrs Comrie, Westall, McLernon, the Chairman, and the in-1 spector consider Mr Anderson’s posi- j tion,” The Motion was carried,
