At a meeting of ladies it was decided to receive subscriptions for a wedding present to Lady Constance Knox, the subscriptions to be limited to 2s 6d. There is to be no canvassing. At 3 o’clock -yesterday morning a two-storey house just outside the township of Otahuhu was destroyed by fire. The house, which was owned by Captain Hutton, has been unoccupied for some considerable time. The cause of tho fire is unknown. The insurance on the house amounted to £650. .
A fire at Prospect |Terraoe, Mount Eden, destroyed a house owned and occupied by A. R. Krishner. It was insured in the Sun Office for £l5O. The furniture and effects were also insured in the same office.
Stratford, last night. George Syme, a sawmiller, was fined £2 for polluting a trout stream by allowing sawdust to flow into it. Napier, last night. The hearing of a civil action, 8. S. Woodcock v. J. F. Ludwig, claiming £2OO in respect to damage to a house caused by a landslip in August, concluded after three days trial. Plaintiff contended that the slip was due to defendant directing storm-water from the section over. a cliff, whereas the defence submitted that the fall was due to an earthquake last year causing a crack in the top of the hill, and to the unprecedented rainfall. Judgment was reserved. Wellington, last night.
The gold export from the colony since January Ist has totalled 395,130 oz, valued £1,592,203, an increase of £47,700 compared with the corresponding nine months of last year. Nelson, last night.
Joseph Jackobson, well known in mining circles, and especially in connection with the Hidden Treasure mine, was found drowned near Takaka, on Sunday evening. Apparently death was the result of a flat-bottom-ed boat, in which he had been sailing, capsizing. He leaves a widow and grown up family.
