John E. Greig. convicted on his own confession of theft, was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labor. Prisoner came from Singapore, where he was well connected, daring the present year. He was addicted to drink, and committed a number of petty thefts.--'"' 1 ' -

A fruit hawker named John Brauman and a woman named Mary Kelliher were stabbed in a brawl in the street last night The former, received several wounds on the arm, and the latter a wound under ,the left year. The injuries, however, are not seriouß. An elderly man named Alexander Smith has been arrested, and was charged with the Offence at the Polios Court. He was remanded till Monday next. Christchurch, last night.

Maurice Johnson, a fireman on the. Haversham Grange, was fined £6 and costs at Lyttelton Polioe Court for being in possession of a marble clook on which duty had not been paid. The same man was charged with having stolen the clook from the oaptain of the Btearaer. The charge was subsequently amended to one of receiving, on. which accused was oonvioted and discharged,whilst a man named Ownes was fined £3 or a month for stealing it.
