The question of materially altering th e original intention of the Bishop Selwyn trust, and especially the suggestion that the Porirua and Otaki trusts should be
taken from the Church Missionary Soci» ety, and the suggested change in respect to religious education requires deliberate and careful consideration, says the Premier, and no departure from the original trust in respect to religious instruction should be made; and, looking at the schemes implied in the recommendations oi the Commission from the point of view of their workable character or otherwise, he is not prepared to fully endorse them —in fact, he thinks they require considerable modification before they could become thoroughly workable schemes. . The Wellington Lance states : “Mr Blair I. Swannell, who was a member of last year’s British team, and was through New Zealand with the New South Wales team that has just returned to the Commonwealth, pricked a card, indicating which matches he considered the New Zealanders would win at Home. Mr Swannell has hajl a wide experience, and can fairly be considered to know the strength of English county teams. This being granted, the probable successses of the New Zealand team on its present tour may be gauged from the fact that Mr Swannell was of the opinion that the Devon County team would beat our boys, and from what he stated it was a long way removed from the weakest team the New Zealanders were set down to meet.
