(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The balance sheet of the South British Insurance Company for the year ended 31st August shows a profit in the revenue accounts of £50,770 18s 4d.. After adding £IO,OOO to the insurance fund the , unallotted shares realised .£44,783 0s Bd, of which £85,872 has been carried to the capital account, £30,000 has been added to the reserve fund and the balance oarrieijl forward, after the payment of a divtden© of 2s 0d per share for the second half-year, is £30,802 10a 7d.

The Directors end staff of > the Standard Insurance Company met to-day to congratulate Mr T. R. Fisher, genera!' manager, on his silver jabilee in connection with the company. The staff presented a silver table service, with a rose bowl for Mrs Fisher, also an illuminated address. The directors presented a clock and side ornamentß, and for Mrs Fisher a case of silverware.
A Chinaman wbb to-day fined £2O and costs for being in possession of a small quantity of opium. The Commissioner of Customs drew attention to the fact that higher fines were imposed in other plaoes. Mr Hanlon, for defendant, objected to this, and said defendant was 70 years of years, and had smoked opium for forty years. It was difficult to give up what had been done (or a lifetime.
Two drapery firms were fined five shillings and oosts. Desiring to display spring goods they applied for permission to bring back assistants, and made a display after six o’olook. No sales were made, but as the assistants were back to show goods and the publio were admitted to iospeot, this was deemed to be open for business. * ■.
Mr A. S. Adams, who is' a candidate for Dunedin Central, addressed a fairly attended meeting of electors at Garrison Hall, and had.a good bearing. He announced himself an Independent, but opposed to Mr Seddon. He favored elective executive, reform of the Legislative Council, and referendum without initiative,. He would grant Crown tenants the right to the freehold, but uot at original valuation. He was opposed to granting preference to unionists, and to having clericalism in echools. A vote of thanks and confidence was passed. Wellington, last night. The Arbitration Court had before it a oase involvibg an application of the - Workers Compensation for Aooidents Aot 1900, in a case where a person accidentally killed has dependents on him who are no', and never have been residents of NSW Zealand. The case of Arthur Farlunger, who, while in the employ of the Government, , was killed by, an accident, was etated for the opibion of the court, the publio trustee, legal.peraonal representative of the deceased, filing a claim for oompene&’ion op behalf, of the wife, who lived in Victoria.. . The court reserved judgment. Mr J. G. W. Aiiken, M.H.R, was. presented on behalf of the citizens with a gold watch and ohain, silver tea servioe, and library of books to mark appreciation of his services to the oity as Mayor foe five years;.
