TE KARAKA NOTES.
[(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)
Despite the very changeable weather still existing, the general appearance of this district is rapidly improving. The hills around bear strong evidence of the fact that a wet winter does them no harm. In high places feed is now becoming fairly plentiful, but the Karaka flat is still very backward in this respect on account of the great amount of water still lying about. Stock in the township is for the most part very poor, while those animals on some of the hills are not much better. However, now that the feed is becoming more plentiful and also more nourishing it is to be hoped that matters will improve in this direction. The creamery is once more at work, but very little is being done, only a few farmers taking milk. The roads, which Jhave been worse this season than for years past, are now rapidly improving, and even the dreaded “ Cliff ” road is once more quite passable. Both Road Board and Council now have men busily employed undoing the damage done by the severe weather of the past few months.
The Karalca library, thanks to the , extreme kindness of Mr E. Carlilo, is now completed, and it is to be hoped that no time will be lost in putting the institution into working order. During the past few months the local school committee has proved itself a very active body. Besides the usual work of repairing fences, etc., a hedge of eleagnus has been planted round the, grounds, and several ornamental trees have been put in, and gravelling has also received a great deal of attention. So far little is heard of the coming Political campaign, although en~ thusiasm will probably be aroused on Mr W. L. Clayton’s arrival on Saturday next. The railway survey party, under Mr L. Campbell, leave for Motu this week to continue the survey of the proposed line. The coming sale of Lome and Puha property is arousing considerable in- , terest locally. The Lome is very fine ■ sheep country, and the Puha flats are sure to be keenly sought after by ' dairymen.
