FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of tho Borough Council was hold last ovoning, when the following members wore present : His Worship tho Mayor (Mr J. Townloy). Ors Harding, Miller, Bright, Whinray, Webb, Lysnar, Colley, ond Sheridan. ABATTOIRS ROAD.

REPORTS

I Tho Overseer reported as follows : Waikanae beaoh protection work.—Trees I have been placed in position on this beaoh for about fij-ohains. The work is unavoidably at a standstill for a few days. The formation of Custom House street is proceeding, The roots of the pine trees in I this street are causing a great deal of work i in this formation. As authorised, tho work in Stanley road is being proceeded with. Ho rooommended that tho bridges bo I [ larrod and painted this epring, as they were getting very bare. He euggested that I tendors bo called for the work.—Adopted. The Inspector roported that he had I had been inspecting <n various parts of I the borough, and found most of the places I in satisfactory condition of cleanliness. I The contract for painting tho house at I Makaraka had been satisfactorily oom-1

pletod by Mr Hall, aod the passing of payment was recommended. Mr Aston, oontraotor for the cottages in town, had oompletod five, leaving four yet to finish. The cause of the fire which bad occurred iu a small cottage off Bright street on tbo 17th was attributed by the Inspector to a largo log of wood in the fire-place setting fire to the mantalpieoe, from which it got behind tho lining and was carried into the roof. The case of diphtheria, a child of 18 months, from Ormond, was reported; the patient had been isolated at tho Old Men’s Home.—Adopted. PATUTAHI METAL. Several letters were received from cartere’offering to supply Patutahi metal, Messrs Habgood Bros., W. Jones, and G. H. Ballard and Co. offered metal at 8s 6d, I and S. Seragg and Co. at 8s 9d. H. Whitfield offered 500yds of metal at Bs. The latter tender was aoceptecl, and the Counoil deoided to take another 600yds at the same prioa from any one of the other carters. BOROUGH LABOR.

Mr P. Green wrote asking for the right of employment by the Council. He had oleaned out drains at absurdly low prices in order to get on the Borough Council staff, but he could not get constant employment from the Oonnoil. The communication was received. ABATTOIRS LOAN. A communication was received from the Treasury in regard to the application for a loan of £4OO for the abattoirs, which had been submitted for the Colonial Treasurer’s provisional approval. ROEBUCK ROAD BRIDGE. Cr Sheridan mads a strong advocacy o* the Roebuck Road bridge. The advertise' ment in regard to the poll of ratepayers to be taken on the question wa3 submitted to the meeting, and several members were inclined to postpone consideration of the matter until next meeting, but Cr Sheridan, urging its importance, secured the unanimous vote of the Council. A vote of the ratepayers on the question will be taken at an early date. RATES IN ARREARS. The Town Clerk was instructed to take immediate proceedings to recover a>l rates in arrears. VICTORIA TOWNSHIP. Or Sheridan presented a petition from the residents of Victoria township, drawing attention to the fact that a'though upward of £IOO was oontribnted to the Borough revenue, they received only a few pounds in return. They asked that Salisbury road should be formed as far as it wsb built upon. After some discussion it was agreed to form and gravel the footpath of the street mentioned. HAITI BEACH SQUATTERS. It was decided to ask the polioe to take steps to remove the remaining tenants on the Kaiti beaoh road. Referring to the recent Supreme Court aotion, the Town Clerk said that the Judge had stated that the right course to adopt was to refer the matter to the police authorities.

Councillors expressed regret that the Council had been mulcted to the extent it had been in regard to tho recent Supreme Court action.
