WAIROA RIVER.
ENGINEER’S OPINIONS. At the last meeting of tbo Wairoa Harbor Board a loiter was read from Mr Leslie Reynolds, 0. E., stating that the charge of GO guineas would iuoludo plans and ostimato of whatovor sohemo ho would advise. Tbo plans would bo sufficient for the Board to work on if they so desired. The ohairman, in moviDg a resolution that tbo engineer's chargo bo accepted, said he thought it wae his bounden' duty that Mr Reynolds should bo prooured to report, so that something could bo done to improve the river entrance. Mr Britnoll seconded pro forma. Ho
said it would be vory unpopular to endeavour to bring in another engineer to report after having been advised by an engineer like Mr Nupier Bell. It would bo of no use, so ho would not support the motion. Mr Tonks said ho would far sooner see tbo money that wa3 proposed to be givon to Mr Roynotda spent in other woiks. Mr Corkill said he had supported the ohairman all alobg in his saheme, but be did not thing it would carry. Ho had given the matter a largo amount of consideration, and he had oome to the oonelusion that ‘dredging would have to be done sooner or later. He understood tbal a deputation of settlors were to wait on the Board to advooato tho procuring of a dredge or sand-pump. He hoped this would not interfere with Mr Powdrell’s soheme, as in BDy case if the letter’s soheine did oarry a dredge would.havo to be purohased to deepen the shallow portions of the river.
The chairman thought a dredge would not be necessary if they a good bar. A dredge would cost a large amount. Mr Moloney said he did not believe in Mr Powdrell’s Whakamabi soheme, and therefore would not support the motion. Ho fully believed the ohairman was con. vinced of the ultimata success of bis soheme if carried out. He bad spoken to Napier seafaring man, and they did not think much of Mr Powdrell’a soheme.
The motion was then pot and lost. The chairman and Mr Corkill for, and Messrs Britnel), Tanks, Moloney, and Poyzer against. Mr Powdrell Baid he would like Mr Napier Bell’s opinion on the Wbakamahi scheme. That engineer had never had it pointed out to him, and if he was prooured ho would like him to confine the report alone to this partioular spot. He moved, and Mr Corkill seconded, that Mr Napier Bell be asked to visit Wairoa and report on the Whakamehi soheme in the event of his visiting the ooloDy. This motion wbb also lost, tho ohairman and Mr Corkill voting for it, and Messrs Poyzer, Brilnell, Tucks and Moloney against it. . , , ,
