At 2 o’olook this morning a fire destroyed a six-roomed bouse occupied by W. McMillan, and owned by W. Heifer. The family escaped in their night olothos, and all their belonging were lost. At a meeting of the Board of Education Chief Inspeotor Petrie advised that one advanced high school would be more valuable than two district high sobools, and be suggested the Board should consider the question before the coming visit of the Inspeotor-General. Mr Parr said if only one high sobool was established there would be many children who would have to travel over four miles, . He much preferred the old proposal for a district high sobool at Ponsonby, and another at New market, with a grammar school in the centre of the city. Mr Bagnall thought a good secondary school would be preferable to a district high school, because higber paid teaohers could be engaged, The district high school allowance of £6 per head was inadequate as the expense ran up to £lO or £l4, A committee was appointed to consider the matter and report. With regard to tbe election of the Education Boards it was resolved [that the Board as the result of perusal of the new Education Bill express its strong objection to tbe introduction of the ward system. The opinion of the Board was that tbe parents of a district generally should eleot the Board members. .
