Mr Morton, President of the New York Equitable Life Assuraljpe Society, declares that henceforth the Equitable will not contribute to political campaign funds. Mr William Kedmond, speaking at Boston, expressed a hope that the physical force party would join the constitutional wing and fight unitedly for Home Rule for Ireland.
_ Brisbane, Sept. 20. P. Levaux, solicitor, a prominent Labor supporter, has been charged at Cairns with the murder of Peter Lum" berg. Accused’s wife was sole beneficiare under Lumberg’s will, which was made three weeks prior to his death. The evidence is purely circumstantial.
Sydney, Sept, 20. The London cable refers to the Myall Creek settlement areas for which the Agent-General is receiving applications under the Closer Settlement Act. Mr Carruthers explains that the farms are not provisionally allotted, but provisionally applied for. As regards assisting with passage money, the Government advances 2 per cent of the value of the farm in the shape of passage money, which is repaid later. Three States have agreed to Mr Carruthers’ proposal that the Braddon clause should be amended so that the Commonwealth may return a fixed sum to the States. Queensland rejected this, desiring a fixed proportion of the surplus, not a fixed sum. Melbourne, Sept, 20. The groom referred to in yesterday s cablegram confessed that he fabricated the sticking-up story to shield himself for losing the horse. _Mr Bent has written to other Premiers suggesting a conference with a view to action on General Booth’s scheme.
