The Maahanui Native Ooflooil on Thursday fined a Maori 30a for supplying liquor to eight native women at Kaiapoi, and Margaret Urn was similarly fined for inviting persons lo a gathering at .which. it was supplied. Margaret Dm, being ill. invited a tobunga from the North Island to 'Attend her, end at his iacaatation, he gave w small portion of whisky to each person present. The case, wbieb had been referred to tbo Native Council by Mr Day, S.M., came before the Magistrate's Court again to-day. The magistrate said it was not to be understood that under the guise of a religious ceremony liqaot could be distributed to Maori women, Defendant was fined Is and 19j costs ia one case, and the police agreed to withdraw the other seven oases.
