Manning Wigg, arrested on a charge of performing an illegal operation, was before the Court to-day, and remanded. The question of bail was deferred.
' Wellington, laßt night. Sir J. Ward, through the commander of the Austrian warship Panther, is presenting the Austrian Emperor with pairs of kiwis, wekas, keas, and tuatara lizards. Commander Hoheni has promised to send the G ovemment a number of chamois.
The New Zealand Police Department states that it is in possession of evidence which proves conclusively that Wharton, executed for murder in Queensland, was identical with the notorious Butler, formerly of Dunedin
Nelson, last night.
The potato blight, phytophlhora infoctant, has appeared in the police garden at Nelson. Samples sent to Professor Kirk have been officially identified as diseased, and an application of the Bordeaux mixture has been urged. The presence of the disease in other districts is suspected.
A petition to the Premier, praying for relief for the family, of Charles Mills, the marker who was shot att he Wakatu rifle range on Saturday week, is being largely signed;
Thames, last night.
Mr Thomas Hannan, who is contesting the Thames seat as an independent progressive, is making a tour of the electorate. The principal planks of his platform are abolition of the Upper House, appointment of a rovisory committee,. freehold tenure, more assistance to mining and miners, a tax on bachelors, and bonus to heads of the largest families. 1 The Fire Brigade received high commendation for courageously fighting Sunday’s fire and confining it to one building, saving the whole block. The Mayor of Auckland and others fowarded cheques as a practical recognition of the splendid work of the brigade.
