The adjourned annual meeting of the ■ Nubaka branch of the New Zealand ' Farmers’ Union was held in the Morere district sohoolroom on Saturday, September 9th. Mr Proudlock presided. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read : from the provincial eeoretary re financial matters; also from the Chief Engineer of Roads on the subject of openiog up the Nubaka river road from Stewart’s crossing to the Maraenui road, statiog that the question of providing for tho cost of the work will receive consideration in the compilation of tho Estimates for the ourrent year. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Shaw for bis evideDoe given before the Royal Commission. Considerable discussion ensued on tho subjeot of erecting a bridge at Stewart’s crossing. Mr Tait proposed, and- Mr N. Molntyre seconded, that Sir William Rusbbll be requested to übo his best endeavors to get a sum placed on the Estimates for the purpose of erecting a bridge at Stewart’s crossing. An amendment was moved by Mr Coop and seconded by Mr M. J. Joblin, to the effect that, failing the ereotion of a bridge at Stewart’s crossing, access be obtained to tho Nubaka bridge by forming a road thtough Mr George Walker’s paddocks. The amendment was carried. On the motion of Mr Gaddum, seconded by Mr Joblin, it was rosoivod that the Cook County Counoil bo informed that tho plaoing of a ferry boat at tho mouth of the Waipaoa river would be a great boon to tho district. It was moved by Mr D. Shaw, seconded by Mr E. Coop, and oar. ried, that tbo Wairoa County Oounoil be requested to send up the enginoor to traverse the main road with tho view of defining where the metal is most needed, as just now is the best time to peg off this work. Messrs Molntyre and Shaw said they would be willing to accompany the engineer if desired. On the motion of Mr Tait it was decided to inform tho Wairoa County Council that thß main road south of Morore requires attention, it being in a most deplorable state. Notico of motion was given by Mr Sloan that at tho next meeting of the union the matter of ! appointing trustees for the Mororo cemetery be considered. On the motion of Mr j J. Reynolds, seconded by Mr Sloan, a cordial vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring officers, Messrs Proudlock and M. J. Jobiio, for their efficient services during the past yea l- . On the motion of Mr E. Coop, seconded by Mr J. Richardson, Mr D. Shaw was eleotod chairman and Mr J. Reynolds sooretary and treasurer for tho ensuing year. Tho meeting then adjourned, . . '■
A new telephone lino has reoeDtly been erected from Tarewa to the homesteads of Messrs W. F. and J. Richardson and F, Denton. A rather severe thunderstorm swept across the district on Saturday, the 9th instant, and on Sunday morning several earth tremors ocourred.
