.(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last nlgbt. Tho Shipmasters’ Association haß forwarded a petition to the Governor of New South Wales, praying for the restoration of tho certificate of Captain Crawshaw of the Mooraki, on the ground that in view of tho circumstances of tho collision between tho Mooraki and Hawk the sentence was of undue severity.
Blonkoim, last night. A fire broke out at 10.30 last night in Mr Frank Mullen’s drapery shop, in the centre of the town, but it was suppressed by menus of the fire brigade’s chemical engine before much damage was done. The engine has been of great service on several occasions. A portion of the goods was damaged by fire, and the fittings and roof slightly charred. The insurances are £SOO on tho stock in the London and Liverpool, £350 on tho building in the Phoenix, and £SO on tho fittings.
The man, W. J. Elder, who took two boxes of matches in his tea at Picton on Wednesday, died the same evening. At the inquest a verdict of death from poison, self administered, was returned. Deceased had a good income and was not worried financially but suffered from despondenoy following on illness.
Christchurob, lost night, Farmers generally express the opinion that this season’s lambing will be very good in most parts of Canterbury and though there has been an abnormal amount ef rain, it has caused no great loss of lambs, most of the rains having been warm and unaccompanied with driving winds. At Lincoln College the lambing has been very good, and tho director states it will probably be by far the best since he took office.
