MANAWATU DEFEATS TARANAKI

.(Per Press Association.) Palmerston North, last night. At football Monawatu defeated Taranaki I to-day by .6 to 3. The game, whioh was playod on dry ground, was willing and exalting from start to finish. Tho teams were evenly matched. Manawatu forwards were superior in effective work, and were in better oonditiou, but the visitors had the best team of books, taken all round. Bourke soorod a clever try for Taranaki and Johnston crossed twioo for Manawatu. Nona of tho tries were converted. Rothiogham, Taranaki, injured his leg and had to retire.

The New Zealand footballers play their first match in England on Saturday noxt against Devon County, at Torquay.
