Auckland, yesterday. The B.s. Manapouri, from tho Islands, passed close to the volcano in Savaii, whioh is still active. The passengers witnessed a brilliant spectacle at night. It is estimated the voloano has ejected millions of tons of matter. The crater is about seven mileß inland. The flow of lava has not reached the sea, but large streams of lava flow down the sides of the mountain. A large gully is completely filled. It is understood that so far there is no loss of life.
The Samoa Zeitung reports that h big meeting was held in front of the Govern* ment House at Motootua on August 17th, at whioh pardon was sought for two high chiefs, Tamaseso and Maleaiifano. Over 1000 ohiefs and orators were present. All were related to the named ohiefs. They sat in Samoan fashion making an iforga, whioh means “ you may slaughter and cook us." They presented mots, which the Governor, after making a spoeob, accepted, and agreed to remit the sentence of deportation on the two ohiefs.
